A flexible virtual training platform combined with live, interactive social coaching. Trained experts teach cognitive strategies to enhance the way individuals think, work and thrive socially.
Context
The Emerging Technologies Lab at the Center for BrainHealth developed Charisma to help users increase their social adeptness. Charisma leverages cutting-edge game development software to allow repeated – but novel – practice with real-time simulation of authentic, dynamic social interactions at varying levels of complexity.
Charisma Virtual Social Coaching ↗ is a personalized, avatar-driven social skill training program. Based on over a decade of research, Charisma combines live, strategy-focused social coaching with in-the-moment practice in a realistic environment. It’s convenient, strength-based, unscripted training conducted entirely online.

How might we help neurodivergent individuals build confidence and perspective in a safe, non-threatening environment?

Crafting realistic and engaging social simulations within a virtual world
Providing users with constructive feedback on their social interactions
Enhancing accessibility and user-friendliness for individuals with varying levels of virtual world experience
Since Charisma's original launch in 2016, the program has grown exponentially. With an increased number of clients and coaches, we needed to further develop how users interact with the scheduling platform as well as the game itself. This included ensuring both elements could accommodate a larger user base while maintaining a seamless and efficient experience.
Key Features
Enhanced Scheduling Platform
We redesigned the scheduling platform to streamline user interaction and facilitate efficient appointment booking for both clients and coaches. This included features like improved search filters, clearer session details, and automated reminders. To address the needs of a larger user base, we incorporated several design decisions:
Dynamic Dashboards
We implemented dynamic dashboards that provide coaches and clients with a personalized overview of their upcoming appointments, past sessions, and key metrics. This allows users to quickly access relevant information and manage their schedules effectively.
Learning Progress for Users
Learning Progress for Users: Clients can track their progress through the program via clear and engaging visualizations of their performance data. This includes charts and graphs that showcase improvements in social skills across different areas.
Personalized Coaching
After each virtual world simulation, users receive personalized feedback from a trained coach. The coach can help users pinpoint areas for improvement and offer strategies on how to be more effective in social interactions.
Intuitive Virtual World Interface
The Charisma virtual world interface is designed to be intuitive and easy to use, even for people with no prior virtual world experience. Users can navigate the environment and interact with virtual characters through simple controls.
Final Deliverable
With an intuitive, streamlined interface Charisma is a powerful tool that can empower individuals of all ages and backgrounds to refine their social skills. By combining the immersive power of a virtual world with expert coaching, Charisma provides users with a safe and effective way to practice social interactions and build confidence.

Charisma is, without a doubt, a pioneer in the field of medicine and research. Looking forward, as this product inevitably grows and expands upon its user base, the Center for BrainHealth will focus on delivering the best experience possible for its clients. With Charisma, key aspects like the importance of accessibility and gamification are emphasized while prioritizing the experience of clinicians and users alike.
