LifeLately.
An AI-powered solution to manage emotions & track mental health progress
Description
An app to empower students to develop self-regulation skills, enhance emotional management, and engage in therapeutic self-help activities.
Context
The mental health crisis in America has grown at a staggering rate. The majority of college students struggle with mental illness. With the rise of this issue, the need for alternative resources has expanded.
As a part of the first cohort of Applied User Experience at the University of Texas at Dallas, our team developed LifeLately to help students feel more confident in managing their mental health independently, foster healthier coping strategies, and ultimately improve their overall well-being.

The Problem
How might we create a solution for college students who face difficulties in self-regulating their emotional well-being and adopting healthy coping mechanisms?
The Process
Research
What do college-aged students use for mental health support?
What do college students think of AI in the mental health industry?
What aspects of mental health should our app help with? What features should be included?
What barriers to do college students face when tackling their mental health problems?
Observations
Mental health for students is large issue, we need to start small.
Students often resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Utilizing an AI-powered chat bot may pose challenges for this user base. Users crave structure, convenience, and incentives.
Discovery
The transition into college life often presents challenges in maintaining emotional well-being and adopting healthy coping mechanisms. In response, college students seek readily available and convenient interventions that empower them to effectively regulate their emotions, monitor their mental health progress, and foster a sense of connectedness within a supportive community.
This underscores the need for research into scalable and accessible interventions that address the unique mental health needs of college students.
Primary Research
Interviews
In these interviews, we spoke with a range of relevant people (current students, people who have taken therapy, tech and mental health professionals) about their backgrounds, experience, views on AI, and what tools would help them improve their mental health, and what features would benefit them.
By understanding each interviewee’s specific expertise and point of view, we were able to further refine the unique concepts, features, and workflows.
Insights
Define
User Persona
Following our research and interviews, we were able to create multiple user personas. By creating detailed personas, we were able to gain a deeper understanding of user needs, motivations, and pain points, which in turn informs problem definition and solution development.

Market Research & Competitor Analysis
Key Features

The Journal feature within the app is designed to be a flexible space for reflection and exploration. Included are options for a blank entry, AI powered question prompts, recommend prompts based on the users current pain points, and a short Snapshot quiz option.
With these, LifeLately’s AI Can generate a summary rundown, situation specific insight, and even suggest simple tasks to help users.
Calendar
The calendar serves as a comprehensive hub for visualizing users’ history, daily experiences, and AI insights. This consolidated view of calendar entries, mood, journal reflections, and AI insights empowers individuals to identify patterns, track progress, and gain a deeper understanding of their daily experiences.
Ai Integration
LifeLately’s AI Integration is not just its own screen, but integrated throughout the app. Weekly target goals and task lists are generated based on user information and input. Users can ask for an AI powered recommendation for each journal entry, and the AI model also draws upon the initial onboarding quiz taken by the user to provide specific suggestions.
Final Deliverable
LifeLately is a solution that aims to empower students to develop self-regulation skills, enhance emotional management, and engage in therapeutic self-help activities. With LifeLately, key aspects like the importance of feeling more confident in managing mental health independently and fostering healthier coping strategies are prioritized while ultimately improving overall well-being.
